An Ode to Robespierre Upon Visiting Arras

So many years have passed since you were here,

So many years since you walked through the streets I follow now.

The hour strikes and the belfry chimes ring out.

Did they sound the same when you were near?

A few small plaques are all that I can find.

Where is the fitting tribute to your life and works?

It seems the memory of you remains concealed,

Hidden behind the myth, the lies, the hate.

And yet - as I walk these streets I feel you near.

I feel your presence all around, hear whispers in the air.

Now I know that you will never leave,

Not while we few remain who praise your name.

So rest in peace, dear Maxime, do not fear.

I will defend your memory all my life.
